Preserve Historical Buildings

Nowadays all in the World is changing constantly, very quickly, we live in a dynamic environment.
Not only talking about technology, additionally population has been growing and many enormous buildings but with small departments are constructed for residential and old buildings are demolished.

In spite of that, from my point of view, government should make laws to preserve some old buildings that have been keeping Historical events through years because of that people can learn about the past episodes of the neighbourhood.

Lizbeth - Post 3

Ciertanly, changes are always necessary for improving areas. This transition happens commonly as an expression of evolution and growth; however, it is important to consider that identity of the places where these changes are made is not lost since would not be recognized by the positives points that these regions have at the time. I think that to avoid this situation, the government could establish some regulation that provides a lower uncertainty of belonging in these cases. So, as in the case of neighborhoods, changes are made only in those parts of the neighborhood where need it. Thus, the changes would become less drastic and would focus on the essence of improvement and progress in stead of the idea of total eradication.

Michel Post 3

In my opinion constantly changing is part of the life, we are involved in the economic system, so as an effect of the process of globalization, cultures around the world are expose to change; the treatments between countries has given a chance to be in contact with other cultures and to take the best of each.
I think that it's is helpful to improve the neighborhoods by adapting them to the modernization; however, we have to focus on preserving the essence and traditions of each.

Ramses Meléndez- post 3

In my opinion the changes in the neighborhoods are good and necessaries when there are problems like insecurity, drugs, gangs or violence and I think in that case is necessaries that the government intervention to change the difficult situation. The best way is offering permits to build a new buildings, new stores and maybe some facilities such as subway station, bus station, schools and parks. On the other hand the problem is the price of the apartment or the house can increase strongly and only the rich people can to buy them and the poor people have to find another neighborhood. So the changes have a positive side and a negative side but I think that the priority is to give people safe places to live.

MERARI-POST 3

Constantly changing is sign of development and evolution. However, cities such as New York that has a radical and fleeting changes should have a specific neighborhoods' regulation  which preserves landmarks and history . Actually, as a consequence of Penn Station's destruction a law was created: "The Landmark Preservation Law and Commission ". At the beginning the law just protected historic buildings and neighborhoods, some years later the law was expanded to public interiors and landscapes . So, the law is a symbol of urban image´s importance, landmarks' preservation and the significance of keeping the essence history of New York City.

I think is important the neighborhoods are changing. It is important be always the vanguard because around the world different places also  are changing  because now there are new tecnologies, discoveries, new things and the population demands new and  better things. I think that the Goverment should design proyects where can foment modern neighborhoods and the same time can preseve their history and important caracteristics. That is relevant because it is very atractive for tourists and each neighborhood can increase the lifestyle of their citizens and be example to others states or countries.

I think that changing a neighborhood id a bad issue, specially on ancient neighborhoods, because ti may cause the loose of the actual facade and probably thousand  of years of a facade and it means to lose the history of the people too, so governments must to protect neighborhoods from dramatically changes because people can have a lack of culture or history by doing dramatically changes.

I think that if the change is to make a better place, then it's right, but if there are monuments and buildings of interest, then the government may make laws for the preservation of these places in the neighborhood.
This article requires a deeper analysis, because maybe let you build remodeling industries that give people jobs. It is therefore a cost-benefit analysis is required.
I think that don't have an answer that said yes or no, first it need be analysed. The answer depend on several factors.

Is good sometimes change neighborhoods long as it is for good, and what the government should do more security and i think do Tourist attractions too in the neighborhood. This would be a good option both to the community and also for people whoHe lives there.
because so people could stand out and be known for the good things that has his neighborhood and not for the bad things that happen there.

Lower manhattan is very different than Midtown, because it's a little more quiet and streets are narrower lower. Midtown Manhattan is the busiest and narrowest streets.
one of the buildings that most caught my attention was the Grand Central Station, was one of my favorite, unfortunately, can not compare with any building where I live because it does not exist, another of the beautiful places that I liked was the Cathedral of St. patrick's, comparing it with the cathedral of the capital of the state from where I am, are two very different styles in architecture and design.

MIDTOWN

In my opinion midtown is more important in Manhattan because is the principal point that many visit Manhattan and and why no?  is the reason for many people visit NY. I think that is more luxury than Lower Manhattan too.

St Patrick's is a beautiful cathedral and i really like when i saw to Guadalupe's virgin because is the saint of Mexican people. In Peto there are a beautiful church too and i can see something about the style of the st Patrick's. I wish return someday.

As we discussed on Tuesday and saw first hand on Thursday, NYC neighborhoods are constantly changing - art community to luxury, poor to rich, industrial to residential. Do you think this is good or bad? Should the government make laws to preserve these neighborhoods, so that they don't change so dramatically? Why or why not?

Although Midtown Manhattan has the highest buildings in the area; lower Manhattan has the most beautiful views from buildings in the area.
Lower Manhattan is the most interesting financial area, however, Midtown Manhattan has very  important banks in the area.

The plaza hotel has a great location for everybody en New York, in the same way Hilton Hotel in Mexico City has a great location for going to visit different hotspots in the city.

Aldo Ivan Lopez Vivanco - Post 2

Altough Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan are located in same city, lower Manhattan is fresher than Midtown Manhattan because lower Manhattan is located closer to the Hudson River than Midtown Manhattan. The streets in lower Manhattan are narrow than in Midtown Manhattan.

In NYC I saw the beautifull St. Patrick's Cathedral and in Mexico is the San Miguel de Allende Cathedral, eventough both cathedrals are ancient buildings; the St. Patrick Cathedral is a Gothic style building in difference to the San Miguel de Allende Cathedral that is a barroque building.

Michel Post 2

I really liked Midtown Manhattan, the area is full of luxury boutiques, there you can find more restaurants than in Lowwer Manhattan. Also Midtown Manhattan has more modern buildings than Lowwer Manhattan, there are a lot bank buildings and skyscrapers.

While walking at Lowwer Manhattan you will see a lot of people in a hurry in order to arrives to time to job, at Midtown Manhattan you will observe the people walking at the streets for shopping.

Last Tuesday I was surprised when we got into the "Plaza Hotel", the stained glass at the top of the bar is amazing. On the same way, we have an amazing strained glass at the top of "Grand Hotel Mexico", it is located at the center of the city. Similarly, it has a restaurant-bar when you can enjoy a good moment with your friends.

Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan are two neighborhoods that, in spite of being in the same area have a lot of differences.
For example, I think in Lower Manhattan weather is cooler than Midtown Manhattan because, while Midtown Manhattan is located a central and closed point, Lower Manhattan is near to the port of Hudson River. However, Midtown Manhattan has a lot of important sites and buildings that are main points to trade and tourism. Also, we can find different types of infrastructure, from ancient to the most modern contructions, but in Lower Manhattan we can find sculptures that have become symbols of New York and these have been preserved or designed for its cultural appreciation.

On the other hand, by way of comparison, one of the places that we visited was The New York Public Library that is next to the Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan. This is one significant place for New Yorkers. In my hometown we have The National Library that is located into the CU Campus of UNAM (my university) and, although these two buildings don't have a similar structure, are two key locations for the development of reading culture in these two cities.

MERARI-POST 2

Although Lower Manhattan is known as a financial area; Midtown Manhattan is the location of different banks as Bank of America. Whereas Lower Manhattan has a working environment; Midtown Manhattan has a tourist environment. However, both places have a similar lifestyle and sights.
Furthermore, Midtown has more historical landmarks and tourist attractions than Lower Manhattan. Midtown Manhattan has the tallest skyscrapers and its streets are wider than Lower Manhattan.

St. Patrick´s Church is taller than Mexico´s Cathedral. Whereas Mexico´s Cathedral has a Baroque architecture, St. Patrick´s Church has a gothic architecture. Furniture and symbols are placed in a similar way in both Churches. However, both churches are historic landmarks of each City.

Ramses 2 post

There are some different things between Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan as such the people in lower Manhattan are worker so they wear suits, formal shoes, and dress by contrast the people in Midtown wear casual outfit because I think lower Manhattan is not a tourist place as  Midtown Manhattan. Also I realized the lower Manhattan has narrower street than Midtown Manhattan because in Lower Manhattan there are many buildings. In my opinion I likes more the tourist attraction midtown Manhattan while some friends think, they like lower Manhattan because in lower Manhattan are Wall street, the bull and Sphere.

I think Rockefeller center is like Santa Fe because in Galerias Santa Fe there are different Stores of clothes, furniture, electronic and buildings of important companies but I think that Rockfeller center is more expensive and modern but Galerias  Santa Fe is larger than Rockfeller center and it has more store and more buildings near.

Lucero Post 2

Both are beautiful places because each has its own sights, sculptures, buildings and its own history.

In Middle Manhattan there are more people than in Lower Manhattan because I think Middle Manhattan has more famous shops, buildings,  the biggest skyscrapers in New York and the people want to visit them. In addition the people in Middle Manhattan have better status and better incomes than in Lower Manhattan. However in Lower Manhattan the people can found the beautiful skyscraper One World Trade Center, the famous Wall Street and they can enjoy several activities.

Torre Latinoamericana is an amazing skyscraper in Mexico City, and this building is very important to mexican people, many people want to visit it and its observatory because they can see all city and this is amazing. However, Rockefeller Center is bigger and more beautiful than Torre Latinoamericana. In addition I think that Rockefeller Center is more famous because near there are important shops like Lego and this is attractive for the tourists.

Jose - Post 2

Lower Manhattan has buildings amazing; however the streets are narrower than Midtown Manhattan. Lower Manhattan is a site of touristic attraction; there is Wall Street, the Sphere, One world Trade, etc.  Similarly, in Midtown we can see fabulous buildings, but it’s a place of buildings of companies. I think that Midtown has more people in the streets.

In Midtown we visited some place, as such Rockefeller, The Plaza Hotel, Grand Central, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and others more. In Yucatan, Mexico are Cathedrals in the same way that in Midtown, but, in contrast, this buildings are different in their structural design.

In lower Manhathan we can see large very significant especially in the financial area buildings, however midtown Manhathan has emblematic and historic buildings in New York and is where most people prefer to visit.
The building impressed me most is the church of St. Patrick's although this in remodeling its beautiful gothic style structure makes it spectacular, just as in my country full of large constructions of churches created in the late fifth century in which you can learn about the history and background in my case Yucatan.

Karen - Post 2

Lower Manhattan has more tourists than Midtown Manhattan, whereas Midtown Manhattan has the biggest skyscrapers in New York City.
Then, in Midtown Manhattan there are a lot of buildings of important and multinational companies where people work everyday, in a similar way, in Lower Manhattan there are a lot of business men that work in Wall Street.

In Polanco, Mexico City is well known a Hotel, Camino Real Polanco, is one of the biggest hotels in our city but i not as giant as The Plaza Hotel.
In addition, Camino Real Polanco is a luxurious hotel with a higher quality in the service, similarly The Plaza Hotel.

Finally, The Plaza Hotel is really near of Central Park, on the other hand Camino Real Polanco is surrounded of enormous buildings of corporations.

Post 2 Description

Hi, all! Yesterday, we saw some of the most important attractions in Midtown, and, on Tuesday, we briefly discussed comparing and contrasting. As such, I'd like your second blog post to focus on the following two points:

  • Compare and contrast Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan (the people, the buildings, the streets, the sights, etc.).
  • Choose one of the buildings you saw in Midtown Manhattan (St. Patrick's, Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center, The Plaza Hotel, Grand Central, etc.) and compare it to a building or other structure in your hometown.

In your response, please use at least 4 of the compare/contrast phrases (one from each category) we discussed in class. Label your post "First Name - Post 2" and, as always, comment on at least one other student's post. This is due before class on Thursday, July 24th.

The 9/11 memorial

The 9/11 memorial is a lage space where used to be the twin towers and the wolrdwide center in New York. This place is now rebuilt and converted into a memorial that inlcudes 1 musemum, 2 big pools in memory of the victims of the 9/11 terrorists attacks and  a large amount of trees, all of them dedicated to the victims of the terrorist atack and in the same number of victims.

When i first time saw the memorial I felt respect and sadness, I was thinking about the families that the victims left behind and how sad is that place for them, however, is good that all that place is dedicated to the fallen and their memories.

The 9/11 memorial is a simbol of peace and to remember the victims of the actacks.

In my city (Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico) is a very little sigh called "La casa quemada" and is a monument to who lost their lifes to achive the independence of Mexico of one of the most important battles in the war for the independence of mexico.

National September 11 Memorial

This symbol is for remembering people who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks
Are two big squares where were used to be the twin towers, basically are two human made
waterfalls.
My first thoughts were about the moment of the atack, because is still amazing for me
the way that it happens. So, the monument made me feel thoughtful about the human
capacity to do harm to others.
It is a symbol because, in certain ways represents a pitiful event in American history.
In my country there is not a similar sight like this. Only the "Hero Kids" in the Chapultepec
Castle, but it has different meaning.

The Sphere

The sphere is a largue metalic sculpture by German sculptor Fritz Koening. That once was in the area between the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan.
When I saw it I thought that it is amazing sculptore, but not for the form size or price. I think that it is fabulous for the mean after the 11/9. It represent the peaceful in U.S.A. And the force to the people.
In my city We don't have any symbols, but in Isla Mujeres there is one the Christ of the bay and it is in honor to men who die inside the sea.

Ramses Post 1

Ramses Meléndez.

I like the One World Trade Center because it is modern and high. Before this building was named freedom tower. I can remember the One World trade Center is the seventh highest building in around of the world and the first in U.S.A. This tower measures 541 meters and it has 94 floors.

When I saw the sight I was impression and excite because I could only see the skyscrapers through internet or social media. Maybe I would have wanted enter and climb to the lookout but I thought the price of the entry is expensive and I didn´t enough time.

I don´t remember exactly the meaning of the One World Trade Center but I think the Americans wanted to show they were able to rise spite of such a strong attack like that. Maybe I think the meaning can be show the economic strong and capitalistic lifestyle.

This sight can be similar others skyscrapers for example Empire state  but the One World Trade Center is newest one in New York City so it the most attractive.

Waterfalls at 9/11 Memorial

Those waterfalls are in Lower Manhattan area and were built in the same place where Twins Towers once stood, in honor of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 when a lot of people died. The purpose of this symbol is to reflect about this unfortunate event.
Waterfalls have the same circumference size as the Twin Towers before the attack. For that reason, are the largest manmade waterfalls in North America.
Around the waterfalls, the architect design a structure of bronze with the names of every person to remind us the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack.

I think it’s a beautiful way to remember this sad event. While the sphere communicate us the damage caused by the attack and the post-event, waterfalls transmit a feeling of peace and a way to preserve the memory of those who lost their lives. From my point of view, the water in continuous movement could be a symbol of the reflection and the memory that are still present in the American’s mind.

Similarly, Mexico had a difficult event in 1968 when many students died during a fight with Mexican government at Tlatelolco’s Plaza, but we don’t have a sight to remember it. However, talking about historical moments we have other kinds of symbols in the city. The Revolution Monument is a sight to remember one of the most important event that happened in the history of Mexico.

MERARI- POST 1

The National September 11 Memorial

The memorial represents a symbol of memory for the people who died in the terror attacks of September 11, the waterfalls are located in the same place where the Twins Tower were stood. These waterfalls are the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America. From my point of view, the names of the dead persons which are written around waterfalls give them a special and deep symbolism because they are an important reminder about the huge number of persons who were there and also it is a recognition for those who lost their life, meanwhile they were saving other ones.

I have never seen big manmade waterfalls, so I was impressed by the size and the design of the waterfalls. I think that the environment of the memorial lead us to make a reflection about the tragedy and sensitizes us about the pain of all the families that lost a member. When I was there I was realizing that built waterfalls is a special symbol about the transition of life.

Even Mexico City has had different tragic events as 1968 Massacre; we do not have a special area or built to remind the loss of student’s life. However, I think it is really important to remind the events that has changed the history of our Country in any way. The waterfalls will be there remind new and old generations an event that changed the history of a Country.

Charging Bull

The charging bull is a sculpture made by an italian artist called Arturo Di Modica. It was made of bronze and the cost to raise it up was $360000.

I found this sculpture amazing, when I saw it I became nervous because since I started my financial studies I wanted to be there. The big animal really represents power and aggressive because of its position, it seems like if the bull is about to attack.

The charging bull represents the power of the American Financial District, it was made a symbol of prosperity and optimism after the 1987 stock market crisis but In my opinion it is a symbol of the financial operation all over the world.

I think  I have never seen any icon similar to the charging bull at my country, the most representative financial icon is the Mexican Stock Market built called Bolsa Mexicana de Valores.

The Sphere
Is a large metallic sculpture by German sculptor Fritz Koenig, displayed in Battery Park, New York City. This was conceived as a symbol of world peace. It was damaged during the tragic events of 11 September 2001, but endures as an icon of hope and the indestructible spirit of U.S.
Formally rededicated with an eternal flame as a memorial to the victims of 9/11. It has become a major tourist attraction, due partly to the fact that it survived the attacks with only dents and holes.

When I saw it, I didn´t know what represent for the country and didn´t know its value I believed that It was only a monument of an important sculptor of U.S and It was only art. Many feelings came up like sorrow, courage, admiration, respect when I knew the true history and its value for the people of U.S.

In Mexico city there is many symbols and my favorite is the “Torre Latinoamericana”. This building is very important and represent hope, certainty, confidence for the mexican people because in the terrible tembror of 20 September 1985 this skyscraper didn't fall and didn't have important damages.

Pools in the 9/11 Memorial
Two big pools are located in the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan, furthermore they were constructed after the terror attacks in 2001 at the place that the Twin Towers used to be.

The pools are enormous as well as the place is always crowded, some people just take photos and watch the impressive cascades, others pray, think and bring flowers to their familiars and friends who died in that unforgettable day for the World.

When I was there, I felt a special vibration, I am very empathetic so that I felt really sad also I could imagine all the suffering of the victims and their families.
On the other hand, the Memorial is a place that transmitted me peace and I could see a stunning rainbow in the cascades.

The National September 11 Memorial is a special place where people remembers with honor and respect the approximately 3,000 victims who died on September 11th, that were killed by the Islamic group Al-Qaeda.

In Mexico City there is a memorial, that is called Memorial of 68 in Tlatelolco, with a lot of photographs on the walls, the names of the young victims, in addition, people usually leave letters, flowers and gifts; however, the Memorial of 68 is a symbolic space where people can think about the event occurred on October 2nd, 1968. Many students that refused against the president and were fighting for their rights, unfortunately were killed by Mexican government.
